PORTLAND — The Bonneville Power Administration, an agency under the U.S. Department of Energy, presented Portland resident James West with one of its highest honors as part of the agency’s 2017 Administrator’s Excellence Awards Program.

West is a 2001 graduate of Astoria High School and went on to study electrical engineering at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

West, who is an operational analyst with BPA’s workplace services team, received the Administrator’s Award for Special Service. The award recognizes individuals or groups who have significantly contributed to BPA’s mission as it serves the Pacific Northwest.

“West is highly regarded for consistently challenging the status quo and striving to improve programs and processes at BPA headquarters,” according to a BPA press release. “He is known for readily offering his technical expertise to help anyone in need. Whether it’s designing a more effective user-friendly website or overhauling conference room scheduling, West is recognized as a major contributor to BPA operational excellence.”

The annual program honors employees and members of the public whose innovation, initiative, superior service or courageous acts have made exceptional contributions to BPA’s mission, the electric utility industry or the local community.

BPA Administrator Elliot Mainzer presented the awards in March at BPA’s Portland headquarters. “These individuals represent excellence in everything they do,” said Mainzer. “No matter their corner of the organization or their specific job, they all do their work in the context of a bigger picture and greater cause. They’ve truly made a difference through their tremendous contributions to BPA’s public-service mission.”

AEA recipients were nominated by their peers and were evaluated on numerous criteria such as excellence in their chosen field, technical achievement, community outreach and service as an “unsung hero.”
