The month of February is jam packed with all kinds of activities for the business community of our region! My monthly article will highlight three of the most significant: 1) Clatsop County Job & Career Fair which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22; 2) Planning for Business Success Workshop, a Succession Planning Workshop on Monday, Feb. 27; 3) CEDR awards nominations that celebrate business success in Clatsop County, and culminates with the annual CEDR awards event being held this year on Wednesday, March 22, at the Seaside Convention Center.

Finding and retaining good employees is a constant issue all businesses face, from small businesses all the way up to our largest employers in the county and region. What is being done about this great workforce need in Clatsop County?

CEDR and Work Source Northwest Oregon are spearheading the third annual Clatsop County Job & Career Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds. The format has been enhanced this year to include adult job seekers in the afternoon.

When it comes to financial management, business planning and succession planning, do you “keep score” on how well your business is performing? Do you have a plan to improve the profitability of your business? Do you know the value of your business? Do you know the best time and process to transition the ownership of our business? Do you know your purpose after you exit your business?

Setting your business up for success is complex. The number of decisions a business owner must make are overwhelming and a key to not only being financially successful, but enjoying the process include three key areas we will address in this seminar:

• Financial Management — understanding your financial statements, establishing budgets, and having regular business reviews.

• Business Planning — creating a plan for enhancing the value of your business. We will introduce you to creating a solid business plan on one page.

• Succession Planning — your retirement and the legacy of your business will likely depend on obtaining the value for your company in a way that maximizes the value, but also sets the company up for future success.

The presenter is Arnie Hendricks, a contract CFO who has served over 300 companies through his company, Financial Management Resources. His goal is to help business owners solve issues which prohibit their profitable growth and prevent owners from increasing the value of their businesses. He is a certified management accountant, a certified exit planning advisor, and a certified family business advisor.

The workshops will be held on Monday, Feb. 27, in Astoria from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at CCC Towler Hall Room 310 and in Seaside from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at our South County Center. Cost is $49. email or call 503-338-2402 to register.

CEDR Awards nomination information

To promote business creation, retention and expansion in Clatsop County, CEDR will recognize outstanding businesses at an awards reception Wednesday, March 22, at the Seaside Convention Center.

Reasons to nominate someone: CEDR wishes to recognize outstanding businesses in Clatsop County — specifically those that have demonstrated remarkable achievement in any of the following areas: customer service; economic impact; entrepreneurship; job creation; service (on the part of the business) to the community; or technological or manufacturing advancement.
