ASTORIA and ILWACO — Bill Dodge and Don Nisbett are professional artists with big followings among the residents and visitors to the Columbia-Pacific area.

They’ve each overcome professional hurdles along the way to success, lessons that will be useful to anyone considering taking the dive into the challenges of making a living by painting.

Nisbett and Dodge share one strategy: Week-in and week-out participation in the Columbia estuary’s two popular outdoor markets: Saturday Market at the Port of Ilwaco and Astoria Sunday Market. They, along with fellow market denizens, have helped turn these events into lively happenings that attract hundreds — and sometimes thousands — of happy shoppers to otherwise quiet spaces.

“The art of business” is a periodic feature of Coast River Business Journal, picking different artists each time to tell their stories. Please give these interviews your attention — and then go check out their artwork!
