Q: When did Ford Electric begin?
Q: How did you first get involved?
A: My great grandpa, Emery, started the company in 1944. My grandpa, Jack, carried it on until my dad, Gene Ford, carried it on. I was just kind of born into it.
Q: Have you always been at this location?
A: We were in Raymond, then moved here. Grandpa moved here sometime in the ‘60s. My grandma had a monogram shop here for a long time, and it was kind of part of Ford Electric. Then grandpa tore it all down and built this.
Q: How many employees do you have overall?
Q: What accounts for a majority of your business? Who are your customers?
A: Our customers are local residents of the peninsula. We also work for the cities, municipalities, schools and businesses, too. About 75% of our work is residential.
Q: What impact has the pandemic had on the business?
A: This year the supply chain is probably our No. 1 issue. There’s specific parts that are really hard to get right now. It’s also the prices. PVC (synthetic plastic) has more than doubled since the start of the pandemic. The cost of doing a job for a customer has gone way up, mostly due to parts.
Q: What’s the biggest difference today?
A: The regulations that are mandated by the state. Every year there are more and more rules. Because there’s more rules, you have to do more work to do the same job. The cost of doing a small job gets more and more expensive for the customer.
Q: How often do you get shocked?
A: Very rarely. I can’t remember the last time.
Q: What electrical maintenance things should homeowners be more mindful of?
A: The panel is the most important part of the electrical system in your house. That’s where a lot of the fires start. If you have an old panel, you want to check for corrosion. It shouldn’t feel warm. It shouldn’t hum or make noise. Any of those things should get checked out.
Q: Are there other electrical issue warning signs?
A: Lights flickering or dimming randomly. A burning or electrical smell.
Q: What part do you enjoy the most?
A: Just the camaraderie of working with a great group of guys and being able to help our customers and give them good service.
